He said to them, “When you pray, say, ‘Father, hallowed be your name…'” Luke 11:2
Harold Sala: Floyd and Marilyn Mohr have been very much involved in a work in Kitale , Kenya . They're here in the studio today and we're going to be talking about something that has been very much on my heart and the heart of my wife. Walk down the hall of almost any hospital anywhere in the world and you will see all kinds of electric lights. But if you walked through Sister Freda's little medical clinic at dark, until recently there was a kerosene lantern in there. Floyd, you have just come back. You have been involved in bringing electricity to the hospital. Tell us about it.
Floyd Mohr: Again, God worked miracles for us and was able to do something that had been wanted and prayed for for a dozen years. And finally while we were there, it was coming to pass. While we were there this last time we actually visited the Kenya Power Company. They had been impressed by God, I truly believe, and negotiated a deal so that they could start putting in power while we were there. We worked with them and they worked so fast that we would be envious of them here in this country, the US , because within four days they had run the electric power for a hospital from the utility power poles right into the hospital. In parallel with that we had a contractor there who was upgrading the emergency lights so that they could truly be part of an electrical system so that they would not have to do surgery, basically, almost in the dark. And so that at night there would be electricity for the patients there at the hospital.
HS: Marilyn, until this happened how did they handle surgery, for example?
Marilyn Mohr: Well, there was a generator sitting out back and they would crank that up. And if they had an emergency at night, they would use it to provide electricity to the operating theater.
HS: For most of us who are listening it's almost inconceivable that you could run a hospital without electricity. Sister Freda is a remarkable woman. My wife tells her story in her new book entitled Heart of Compassion, Hands of Care . When you first met Sister Freda, how did she impress you?
FM: Sister Freda is the most gracious, humble lady whom I have ever met. If there's a problem her first solution is “Let's pray.” Not “Let's go see how we can find a solution” but “Let's pray.” And then we go work to see what God will provide and how we can work with God so that that solution would work.
HS: You know, Marilyn, in the last minute what have I not asked you about that you really want to share with us today?
MM: I want to share that this person who runs the hospital, Sister Freda, is the most amazing woman I have ever seen. She, of course, is educated in medical science. But far more than that, she knows her God. She loves her God. She calls upon Him daily. And she walks by faith.
HS: You know, even as we're talking I can see this gentle African woman lay her hand on a suffering patient, reach over and pray with that person. Remarkable woman! And that's why I would encourage you to get Darlene's book entitled Heart of Compassion, Hands of Care . In all probability you'll find it in your local Christian bookstore. It's being distributed by WingSpread Publishers here in the US . Or you can go to our web site www.guidelines.org and click on the book nook. I wish we had more time but it's flown by so quickly. Thank you, Floyd and Marilyn Mohr for being with us on today's edition of Guidelines.
