God Is a Good Accountant

Bible Text: Matthew 6:8, Psalm 22:4-5 | Speaker: Darlene Sala | Series: Encouraging Words |

My Dad, who was in ministry for 74 years, began preaching during the difficult days of the 1930s, when money was hard to come by. When he became pastor of a small church, only one man in that church had a job—and then he got laid off.

Daddy told that one day he had to get an important letter off in the mail–it had to be posted that day, but he did not have three cents to buy a postage stamp. In those days you could mail a first class letter for three cents.

But when the mailman came that morning he got a letter from a friend, and there between the pages of the letter was a three-cent stamp. Not a word was said about it in the letter, but the Lord had known, several days before, that he was going to need a postage stamp and He had graciously put it into the heart of this friend to drop a stamp into the envelope.

He remembered another time that he needed a dime for something important—just ten cents, but he did not have it. Again a letter came with a dime thrown in. He used to exclaim, “How wonderful the Lord is to His children!”

I’m glad he told us these experiences, because it taught me that God is a good accountant. He knows exactly how much you have and how much you need at any given moment. His books are always up to date. It’s no surprise to Him when you tell Him about your need. The Bible says, “Your Father knows what you need before you ask him” (Matthew 6:8). And if He has supplied His children’s needs in the past, you can know that He will also meet their present needs.

David wrote in Psalm 22, “In you our fathers put their trust… They cried to you and were saved; in you they trusted and were not disappointed” (Psalm 22:4-5). It’s still true today.

You may think, “God answers prayer for other people, but I don’t know if He will for me.” Just try Him. For He knows what you need even before you ask.
