I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me. I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night— but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you. Psalm 139:7-12

One of the worst feelings a person can have is that of being utterly and hopelessly trapped.

We can feel trapped by circumstances like an unhappy marriage, heavy responsibilities, or a job we dislike. In these situations, God still meets us. There is no trap, no darkness, no oppression that can keep us from His presence. The writer of many of the Bible’s Psalms, said, “I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me. I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night— but even in darkness I cannot hide from you” (Psalm 139:7-12a).

A woman named Drita discovered that God’s presence was with her in her darkest hour. Her parents had forced her into a marriage that benefitted them financially, but she felt like a prisoner. Drita’s new husband didn’t treat her with love and she despaired as she imagined her entire life in this marital “business arrangement.”

But Drita began listening to a radio broadcast about Jesus’s love for her. Her mind and emotions underwent a transformation as she listened–-God met her and revealed His love for her and His power to change her, even if her circumstances weren’t any different.

There are times we can and must change dangerous circumstances to the best of our ability. But when we feel totally trapped, God is even more powerful than circumstances!
