What’s in Your Heart?

The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7

How do we impress others? We humans spend a lot of time and money trying to figure this one out.

Whether it’s for a date or a job interview, we want to know what others want. What are companies looking for in potential hires? What do men want? What are women attracted to? But what about God? What does all-seeing and all-knowing God look for in our hearts and lives?

Shauna lives in a country that views women as less important than men. She was used to being dismissed, ignored, and belittled. So, when she heard about God, she assumed He probably wouldn’t notice her worship and prayers. But when she was given a Bible by a friend, Shauna discovered some startling verses. She read, “The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7), and “My hands have made both heaven and earth; they and everything in them are mine. I, the Lord, have spoken! “I will bless those who have humble and contrite hearts, who tremble at my word” (Isaiah 66:2).

God isn’t looking for power or strength, intelligence or charm, but at the heart. Whether you’re a woman or man, adult or child, it’s the posture of your heart God looks at–not status, reputation, or credentials. Hebrews 11, verse 6 says, “it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.”

You can come to God today in the vulnerable honesty of your need, in faith that He sees and welcomes you right where you are.
