If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. Matthew 5:41 NIV

You’ve done your part. You’ve given what’s fair. Then someone asks for more. What do you do?

In many parts of life, we measure what’s fair. Banks lend money based on what can be repaid. Employers pay for work completed. That kind of thinking is wise.

But Jesus invites us into something far less calculated in how we treat others. He said this: “If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles” (Matthew 5:41 NIV). In His day, Roman soldiers could force any civilian to carry their gear for one mile—it was humiliating and deeply resented. Going a second mile? Unthinkable. Yet Jesus said: choose it. He was describing someone who turns a forced burden into an act of unexpected generosity.

Why would anyone do that? Because this is how God has treated us. God sees our resentful, impatient, self-protective hearts and still gives. He gives forgiveness, patience, and second chances. He gives more than required. More than earned.

Mike will never forget the day he accidentally crashed into a brand-new luxury car. He climbed out shaking, bracing for anger. Instead, the other driver put a hand on his shoulder and said, “I have a son about your age. I know how you must be feeling. Don’t worry. This will work out.” Mike never forgot it. He expected anger. He met compassion. And that mercy reshaped the kind of man he became.

What might going the second mile look like? Perhaps giving your time when it isn’t required or responding with patience when you’ve already had enough. Where might He be inviting you to go one step further today?
