A man in the Democratic Republic of the Congo couldn’t stop thinking about what he had lost.
Kasoki and his father had built a business. When it collapsed, so did his sense of who he was. Every day he replayed what had been taken from him—the work, the future he’d imagined, the purpose he’d found in it all. Then one morning, overwhelmed by fear and worry, Kasoki turned on the radio.
In his own language, he listened to a devotional about a woman named May. After losing her late husband’s wedding ring, May had cried for hours. As she mourned, someone gently pointed out, “You depended more on your husband’s love than on Jesus’s love.”
Those words traveled across the world and reached Kasoki. He realized that the same thing was true of him. May had been holding tightly to a symbol of love she’d lost. Kasoki had been holding tightly to an identity built on what he’d once had. Like May, he needed to remember that Jesus had never stopped loving him and never would.
May lives in America. Her story was woven into a devotional, translated into Swahili, and broadcast by radio in Africa, where it found Kasoki on exactly the right morning. Today, rather than defining himself in what he lost, Kasoki has found peace in God’s love. Scripture proclaims: “… nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:39, excerpted).
