If someone asked you what you did yesterday, how much of it would seem spiritual?
Perhaps you answered emails, washed dishes, sat in traffic, studied for an exam, cared for a child, or worried about a difficult conversation. Most of us would divide life into two categories: spiritual moments and ordinary moments. We imagine God is really present during church services, prayer times, or Bible studies, but less involved in the routines that fill most of our days. Sound familiar?
A shepherd named David saw life differently. He wrote many songs in the Bible about God but he never wrote, “The Lord is with me when I worship,” or “The Lord is with me when life is going well.” Instead, He simply wrote, “The Lord is always with me” (Psalm 16:8). Always includes difficult Mondays, ordinary Tuesdays, and joyful Fridays.
Jesus echoed that same truth when He said, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). Sheep don’t visit their shepherd for an hour each week. They live with him, learning his voice as they walk together through fields, valleys, and unfamiliar paths. The shepherd’s presence is the sheep’s everyday reality.
A university student named Olivia put this into practice during her exam week. As she walked to class, she prayed, “Jesus, please give me wisdom and peace.” The questions on her test weren’t any easier than she’d expected, but she faced them with a calm confidence she’d never experienced before.
Faith isn’t simply believing that one day we’ll be with Jesus. It’s learning to recognize He’s with us today. All of life’s moments are spiritual when the Good Shepherd is leading us through them.
