But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) For he raised us from the dead along with Christ. Ephesians 2:4-6a

Ever heard the story of the man who falls into a pit that he can’t get out of?

From the darkness, the man desperately calls for help. A doctor passes by and writes him a prescription. A professor throws down a book explaining the pit. A self-help expert tells him he can climb out if he tries hard enough. And a religious leader tells him what he did wrong to fall in.

Then Jesus comes by. What Jesus does in the story is different than all the others. In the fictional story and in our own lives, what Jesus did is described like this:

“The good news is not that the Savior came to the side of the pit into which we had fallen, and extended His hand, calling us to take hold. The good news is that the Savior dove into the pit all the way down to the bottom. And at the bottom, he calls us to fall into His arms! Faith is collapsing into grace; after all the striving and agonizing, faith is simply stopping and collapsing into a new creation at no charge.”[1]

All of us were in that pit of despair—the pit of all the things we’ve done wrong and can’t stop ourselves from continuing to do. But the Bible tells that “God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead … For he raised us from the dead along with Christ” (Ephesians 2:4-6a).

Jesus is with you in the pit you may be in today. He waits with forgiveness and a brand new life. All you need to do is collapse into His arms.
