Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

Is God looking for perfect people?

A husband once shared his frustration over his wife running back into the house, as they were leaving just to straighten the pillows on their bed. She couldn’t leave her home unless everything was perfect! We all can have a bit of a perfectionism in some area of our lives. How about when you got the first scratch on your car or dent in a new appliance?

So, how do we navigate a world where tea spills on books, kids draw on walls, and windows get broken by unexpected footballs? These are all part of real life, much like the scars, heartaches, and disappointments we carry around with us. What does God think of us, battered and bruised as we are? Does He discard us and look for perfect, unscratched people? Not at all!

The Bible says, “Indeed, we all make many mistakes” (James 3:2a). Trying to hide those imperfections can be exhausting. Jesus says, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Jesus invites the battered and broken to come to Him. He brings His beautiful light into the very cracks we are ashamed of. He turns our imperfections into stories that showcase His goodness, despite everything that your enemy, Satan, meant for harm.

A poet and songwriter once penned the words, “Ring the bells that still can ring, Forget your perfect offering. There is a crack, a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.”[1] Invite Jesus into those areas of your heart where you feel flawed and desperate. Your cracks and imperfections don’t scare Him. Jesus wants to meet you in your real, imperfect life.
