Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. Proverbs 3:5-6
If you grew up not feeling safe, you likely find a sense of security today in controlling as much as possible.
Don’t you love the feeling of being in control? We like to feel like we have power over our lives, our plans, and our future. Yet life has a way of showing us that our control is limited. Jobs disappear, relationships fall apart, and health can fade in an instant.
In 1912, a ship named the “Titanic” that was thought to be unsinkable met a tragic end. Designed with cutting-edge technology, the ship was a symbol of human achievement and control over nature. Yet, despite all the safeguards, the Titanic sank on its maiden voyage, reminding us how fragile human control truly is. A psychiatrist once noted, “The more we try to control life, the less control we have”.[1] So where do we turn when life spins out of control?
The Bible offers us a different kind of confidence—one that doesn’t rely on our ability to manage every detail. It says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Throughout history, followers of Jesus have discovered the freedom that comes from letting Him lead. A woman named Corrie, who survived a concentration camp, once said, “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God”.[2] Her life was full of circumstances she couldn’t control, but her faith in God’s control gave her a peace she shared with all who would listen.
What are you trying to control today? Is it working? God invites you to trust Him instead. His control is far better than ours.
