[Jesus] radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. Hebrews 1:3

Have you had coffee with a friend recently? If so, let me guess–you probably talked about how bad things are. Whether we’re talking about politics, the economy or social fraying, things feel like they’re falling apart. Where is God in the reality of the world and my life today? We desperately need to know if God is in our specific, relevant present.

But our tendency is to search God out when only when we need Him. When we’re crying out for Him to work in the way we want, we’re quick to rush on to fix things, concluding He isn’t here or doesn’t care.

The Bible assures us that the world is being sustained every minute by Jesus. Scripture says in Hebrews, “[Jesus] radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command” (Hebrews 1:3). He is working marvelously at work in our lives but often it’s in the unexpected, the surprising and sometimes, His slow ways.

Our world is imperfect because of sin. But even brokenness and evil can’t suppress the beauty and goodness of God’s design and His daily work all around us. He was in the sunrise that began your day. Each breath you take is given by Him and the way your body healed itself after a cold is God’s kindness expressed in your body’s design.

Even if you’re in a difficult season, a hard place, know that God loved you so much that He gave you life. He is sustaining you and will keep on doing it. When we slow down enough, we’ll see Him. When we listen and read His letter of love, the Bible, we’ll hear.
