The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; He rescues those whose spirits are crushed. Psalm 34:18

Can you follow God and still feel crushed by depression? The Bible says you can—and that God meets you there.

Maria sat on the edge of her bed, staring at the floor. The air felt heavy. She hadn’t showered in days, and all her clothes needed washing. “God,” she whispered, “If You’re here … why do I feel so empty?

Depression can feel like being buried under a wet, heavy blanket—your body weighed down, and your thoughts clouded. Even simple tasks seem overwhelming. Experts say that depression isn’t only emotional; it impacts the brain and the body, draining energy and hope.

And yet, some of God’s most faithful followers knew this darkness. In the Bible, a woman named Hannah wept until she couldn’t eat. King David said, “Darkness is my closest friend.” The prophet Elijah prayed, “God, I’ve had enough—take my life.”

These people weren’t faithless. They were human. And God met them right in their depression. To Hannah, He gave an answer to her prayer. To David, He gave songs and vision. To Elijah, He sent food, rest, and an angel.

The Bible says that “The Lord rescues those whose spirits are crushed” (Psalm 34:18). God never dismisses your pain, and He hasn’t gone anywhere. Depression isn’t a sign that your faith is broken—it’s a sign you need comfort, not condemnation.

If hope feels out of reach today, tell someone you trust how you’re feeling. Pray—even if all you can say is, “God, help me.” He is with you, offering comfort, love and to make good on His promise to rescue the brokenhearted.
