The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. 2 Chronicles 16:9
We will catch you and you will pay the price! That was the warning the New York City Sanitation Department posted online against dumping garbage.
The funny thing about the post was the image that went with it—one seen around the world. The post read, “Cameras are EVERYWHERE! Don’t get caught doing something you *maybe* shouldn’t be doing”[1] and showed a business executive caught on camera at a concert, arms around a female co-worker who wasn’t his wife—but someone else’s!
In much of the world cameras are everywhere. Many picture God as a “giant eye in the sky” looking down to catch us doing wrong. The Bible does say, “The Lord looks down from heaven and sees the whole human race. From his throne he observes all who live on the earth” (Psalm 33:13-14).
But the reason God is watching may surprise you.
Scripture says, “The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him” (2 Chronicles 16:9). God longs to bless those who have drawn close to Him, who have accepted His gift of forgiveness and relationship. Just as a parent delights in their offspring, God smiles when He sees you.
One mom wanted to train the hearts of her young children to respond to her love for them. She watched them play—not to catch them in bad behavior, but, whenever possible, to reward them with stickers which read: “I was caught being GOOD!”
That’s God’s heart toward us—He’s not scanning the earth to shame us but to delight in, bless and strengthen hearts turned toward Him.
