God Likes You

Father, I want these whom you have given me to be with me where I am. John 17:24

How do you think God feels about you?

“Probably mad at me. Or disappointed,” answered one college student. “I haven’t been living very morally.” If you think God is mad at you, it’s unlikely you’ll want to be with Him. And if you believe God doesn’t even notice you, why move toward Him?

The good news is God likes you and wants you to know Him. Jesus prayed, “Father, I want these whom you have given me to be with me where I am” (John 17:24a).  Right where you are in your journey, God likes and wants to be with you. Maybe, like that college student, you’re thinking about the sin and compromises in your life and wondering why God would still like you. Imagine the surprise of prostitutes, tax collectors, and people generally deemed sinners by society when they realized Jesus wanted to spend time with them! He laughed with them. He wanted to eat meals with them (Luke 5:29-32).

God isn’t in denial about the problems in our lives, But He knows that He is the solution for our battle against sin. And the first step is spending time with Jesus, discovering who He is and how much He enjoys you. One minister says it this way: “The human heart was made to have the assurance that we are loved by God. God put that longing in us. We’ll never be able to outrun that.”^[1]

While God can feel mad or sad for a moment over our sin, that’s not His perpetual heart toward you. Discovering God’s love and delight in knowing you will unlock your heart to know and enjoy God. Be sure of this today:  God likes you.
