God notices everything! He really does. He sees you on a steaming hot day when you take cold water out to the guy who is pulling weeds in your backyard. He saw that understanding hug you gave your wife after the metal post reached out and bent her car fender. He knows when you bite your tongue instead of yelling at your young son because the juice spilled when he insisted on “helping” you fix breakfast.
He sees. And someday, He will reward you. “Wait till the Lord comes,” the apostle Paul wrote. “He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men’s hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God.”
On the other hand, sometimes we’re quick to do kind things when people are watching, and not so quick when we think no one will ever see. But the true test of faithfulness to God is our willingness to do what pleases Him day after day when no one else knows.
A pastor’s wife, Ruth Harms Calkin, wrote this prayer called “I Wonder”:
You know, Lord,
How I serve You
With great emotional fervor
In the limelight.
You know how eagerly
I speak for You
At a women’s club.
You know my genuine enthusiasm
At a Bible study.
But how would I react, I wonder,
If You pointed to a basin of water
And asked me to wash
The calloused feet
Of a bent and wrinkled old woman
Day after day,
Month after month,
In a room where nobody saw
And nobody knew.
F.W. Faber wrote, “Love’s secret is to be always doing things for God, and not to mind because they are such very little ones.”
Someday you will receive praise from God, for God notices!
