The Lord our God has secrets known to no one.  We are not accountable for them, but we and our children are accountable forever for all that he has revealed to us, so that we may obey all the terms of these instructions. Deuteronomy 29:29

Ever been asked, “What’s your sign?” Since the beginning of time, we’ve wanted to know what’s coming next, turning to fortune-tellers, tea leaves in teacups and horoscopes. Astrology is often viewed as little more than a fun conversation opener. But God alone is our only sure source of self-knowledge, understanding and guidance for the future. One writer puts it this way: “Astrology is an attempt by humans to find God’s divine will through means other than what God has appointed and… attempts to attribute to the stars and planets power that belongs to God alone.”[1]

There is such a thing as supernatural knowledge. The Bible says, “The Lord our God has secrets known to no one.  We are not accountable for them, but we and our children are accountable forever for all that he has revealed to us, so that we may obey all the terms of these instructions” (Deuteronomy 29:29). If you’re a follower of Jesus, God specifically tells you not to practice fortune telling, or a list of other occultic practices (Deuteronomy 18:11). God calls them detestable and here’s why.

God knows that you need wisdom in this life.  He says, “If any of you lack wisdom… ask and I’ll give it to you!” (James 1:5, author’s paraphrase) and “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you” (Psalm 32:8). Jesus follower, you are accountable for obeying what God has revealed to you in Scripture. Then you can say, with the writer of Psalm 16:5: “You, LORD, are all I have, and you give me all I need; my future is in your hands” (GNT).
