O God, listen to my cry! Hear my prayer! From the ends of the earth, I cry to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to your towering rock of safety, for you are my save refuge. Psalm 61:1-3a

It can only take a moment for everything to unravel.

Mark was in a busy train station when someone distracted him. When he turned around his backpack was gone. No wallet. No passport. No phone. He went to the station police, and they pretty much laughed at him. That was it—he was at his breaking point.

In life’s moments like this your chest feels tight, your thoughts race. Being overwhelmed is more than stress. It’s when your emotions, mind, and body all say: This is too much. Sometimes what finally breaks you might even be something that seems small—it’s resting on top of a pile of things you’ve been carrying too long. For a young girl, it was a cruel text from classmates. It wasn’t just the message—it was the weeks of loneliness before that.

Overwhelm feels isolating, like no one sees or understands. But the Psalms of the Bible remind us: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; He rescues those whose spirits are crushed” (Psalm 34:18). Overwhelm doesn’t push God away—it draws Him near. In fact, the writer of the Bible’s Psalms cried out: “O God, listen to my cry! Hear my prayer! From the ends of the earth, I cry to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to your towering rock of safety, for you are my safe refuge” (Psalm 61:1-3a).

These are exactly the places God wants to meet you—with presence and peace, truth and gentle kindness. So, what can you do? Start with some deep, slow breaths and then, like the Psalm writer, you can say, “My heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to your towering rock of safety.”
