Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this: The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. Lamentations 3:21-23
Disappointment hits like a wave—that sick feeling flows over you from your head right down to your toes. Not again, you think.
The doctor passed the ultrasound back and forth, but the sign of life that had once been there, was gone. This was Alejandra’s third miscarriage. It was loss upon loss for her and her husband. He’d been told that he was getting a great job offer after over two years of searching for employment. But that morning had come the email saying the company had gone with a different applicant at the last minute. The couple felt crushed by disappointment. Alejandra was heartbroken and her husband was mad. Neither one felt like praying but they did pray. They went to God with tears, questions and heartbreak.
It’s safe to say that God didn’t mind the confusion, even the anger, in their prayers. Even in crushing disappointments, God welcomes us to come to Him with all our feelings. He made sure that there was an entire book in the Bible that’s made up of crying, pleading and mournful prayers. It’s called Lamentations. But right in the middle of the book, we find the author saying: “Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this: The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning … Though he brings grief, he also shows compassion because of the greatness of his unfailing love. For he does not enjoy hurting people or causing them sorrow” (3:21-23, 32-33).
God has not stopped loving you. In your disappointment, you can take even angry questions and bewilderment to Him. Even now—in the in the middle of your story, there’s a morning coming for tonight’s disappointing darkness.
