It’s the Little Things
“If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities. Luke 16:10
It’s the little things in life that are the important things. Even a rock band knew that.
“It’s one of those rock ‘n’ roll legends that turns out to be true,” explains a journalist. In the 1980s, a party rock superstar band demanded, in a clause embedded in their tour contract, that no brown colored M&M candies be allowed backstage at their concerts.[1]
Why the hatred for the little brown chocolates? The band’s show included stunts such as a dangerous fireworks show and the band figured, if show producers read the contract carefully enough to pay close enough attention to the candy in their dressing room, similar care would have been taken with the pyrotechnics.
It is the little things in life that speak the loudest. Jesus said that if you are “faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones” (Luke 16:10). In our relationships, it’s the little things that show that love is genuine and as scripture says, “has been written on the heart” (2 Corinthians 3:3). More than flowers, fancy dinners or gifts, Olivia knows how much her husband loves her by how quiet he is as he moves around the house, making his coffee in the early morning while she still sleeps. Her husband knows she loves him by the backup shaving cream he finds in the cupboard just when he runs out.
Love that pays attention to the small things is a love that can be trusted and relied on. Think about those you love. What small thing can you do for them that says, “I see you. I get you. You’re important to me?” Or better, to love the Jesus way, what small act of care and regard can you do today for someone who doesn’t love you?
