Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. John 7:37
We are thirsty people. Ride public transportation anywhere in the world and you’ll see people clutching all varieties of water bottles!
Although we sip all day long, our physical thirst returns again and again. Even Jesus got thirsty. He asked a woman he met at a well for a drink one day while He was on earth (John 4). When it comes to our spiritual health, it’s much the same. This stressful life dries up our spirits each and every day. Without replenishment, our awareness of God and His love and care for us, evaporates so quickly.
The writer of the Bible’s psalms prayed this: “O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water” (Psalm 63:1). One writer points out, “Jesus doesn’t have what my soul needs; he is what I need.[1]
Jesus offers us what’s been called “living water.” He said, “Anyone who drinks [this] water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life” (John 4:13-14).
How do we get some of that living water? Here are some ways we can access it: Start your day with reading His words to you that are in the Bible. Later, take another sip by stepping away for five minutes to consider what you read that morning. Remind yourself that Jesus promises fresh help for today and eternal life for tomorrow.
“Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink,” Jesus calls (John 7:37). Let’s remember to keep sipping!
