It’s wonderful that the Bible contains so many verses that assure us that God does not change. Malachi 3:6 says, “I am the Lord, I change not.” Hebrews 13:8 tells us, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
If God does not change, that means His attributes or characteristics do not change. The Westminster Shorter Catechism describes God by His attributes, saying that He is “Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in His being, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth.” And that definition only covers nine of God’s attributes. Well-known preacher Charles Spurgeon listed 25 different traits of God that do not change!
If God does not change, His promises do not change. Numbers 23:19 says, “God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?” Whatever God promises will always be true.
If God does not change, His gifts to us are ours forever. James 1:17 says, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” Our salvation is forever. Forgiveness of our sins is forever. Eternal life is forever.
Psalm 102:27 NLT tells us of God: “You are always the same.” The God we serve is the same God today as He was when He spoke the world into existence. He is the same God today as He was the day He raised Jesus from the dead.
In a society that changes constantly, what wonderful assurance it is to know that our God never changes. “God cannot grow…less powerful.”[1]
