This is the day that the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24

Are you constantly dreaming about the future and people and places far away?

A man sat on a park bench with an old wise owl. “Why is happiness so elusive?” he asked the owl. “Because you look for it in the future instead of the present,” the owl replied. There’s nothing wrong with dreaming and having hopes for tomorrow, but today, here’s a reminder to look around you. Don’t miss the plans, purposes and joy God has for you here and now!

A man named Abraham learned this lesson thousands of years ago. Abraham was a tremendous visionary, having left everything to follow God to an unknown place. While on that journey, Abraham came to a fork in the road where he and his nephew, Lot, went their separate ways because of fighting between their households. After Lot left, Abraham likely felt a great deal of sadness. Abraham had no children and Lot had been like a son to him. But God speaks to Abraham, saying, “Look as far as you can see in every direction—north and south, east and west. I am giving you all this land, as far as you can see…Go and walk through the land in every direction, for I am giving it to you.” (Genesis 13:14-17).

Eventually, God did miraculously give Abraham a son. Abraham’s story is a powerful reminder for us today. “This,” says the Bible, “is the day that the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24). What has God given you today? Take a moment to look around and consider your own family, your situation, your surroundings. Ask Him to help you take joy in what He’s given, where He’s placed you and the opportunities for where you are right now.
