One God or Three? Understanding the Trinity
May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. 2 Corinthians 13:14
When Amina first became a Christian, she had a big question: “Do Christians believe in one God or three?”
Amina had always thought Christianity was a one-God faith, but now she kept hearing about God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It didn’t make sense.
The Bible is clear— there is only one God. It says, “The Lord our God, the Lord is one.” (Deuteronomy 6:4b). But throughout Scripture, we see God revealing Himself in three ways— as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They are not separate Gods but the same God, working in different ways.
First, let’s meet God the Father, your Loving Creator. God the Father created the world, watches over it, and sent Jesus to rescue us from sin. He is your provider, your protector, and your loving parent. Jesus talked to Him as “Father” (Luke 23:46), showing a close, caring relationship.
Second, is Jesus—God who walked among us. Jesus is God who became human so we could know Him personally. He healed the sick, forgave sins, and showed what God is like (John 14:9). He came to save us, bringing us back to God.
Third, is the Holy Spirit, our Helper and God with you every day. Jesus told His followers He would send the Holy Spirit—not just to be with them, but to live inside them. The Holy Spirit guides, strengthens, and comforts us daily (John 14:26).
The Trinity is a mystery we can’t fully grasp, but we can experience it. You get to know God as your Father, experience His kindness in Jesus, and rely on His help through the Holy Spirit. You don’t need to understand everything to experience God’s love.
