Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! 2 Corinthians 5:17

Feeling like a failure? You’re staring at a powerful opportunity.

A mother feels guilty for shouting harshly at her daughter. A husband realizes he’s getting too close to a coworker. A student recognizes he is going to fail the class unless something changes.

There are pivotal moments in our lives when we realize that the course we’re currently on is heading for disaster. These vulnerable moments of self-reflection can quickly turn into spirals of shame and panic. It’s also possible to ignore the warning flags. But there’s a third possibility too. Our darkest moments can be a catalyst for incredible transformation.

The life of following Jesus is one of constant transformation and calibration. The Bible declares that “Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” (2 Corinthians 5:17). When you first surrender control of your life to Jesus, you are remade. But we continue to need the power of the Holy Spirit to keep on making us into increasingly newer people—people who are more like Jesus.

And we will continue to struggle. To turn failure into a pivotal moment, first, observe what’s happening in your life. How did you get here? Most of us need help implementing change. You might feel passionate about your new direction but lose momentum if you lack accountability and structure. For example, a student in danger of failing a class might meet with the teacher, join a study group and have set study hours. Practical planning is essential for change to happen.

Even in failure, following Jesus is a life of ongoing transformation by the power of God’s Spirit.
