Jesus replied, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don’t know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father! So why are you asking me to show him to you?” John 14:9

We all picture God in some way. One little girl was brave enough to draw what she believed.

Maybe you’ve heard this cute story: A little girl sat drawing with bright colors and bold strokes. Her teacher leaned over and asked,

“What are you drawing?”

“God,” she said confidently.

“But no one knows what God looks like,” the teacher replied.

Without looking up, the little girl said, “They will when I’m finished!”

Picturing God speaks to something deep in all of us: we long to know what God is really like. Is He distant? Near? Can we even begin to understand Him? The Bible says, “God is Spirit” (John 4:24). He isn’t limited by space or time. He is infinite, eternal, and far beyond our imagination. Talking about Himself in the Bible, God says, “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts … and my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine” (Isaiah 55:8).

But God hasn’t stayed distant. In Jesus Christ, God stepped into our world and revealed Himself, even taking on a fully human body. Jesus showed us how God responds to us, befriends us, invites us to know Him. Jesus said, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father [God]” (John 14:9).

Want to know what God is like? Start with Jesus.

Read the Gospels—they’re the first four books of the New Testament named Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Watch how Jesus treats people, what He says, and how He loves. And talk to Him as you read because prayer is simply conversation. You can start with, “Jesus, help me see who You are.”

A god small enough to explain wouldn’t be big enough to worship. But the God who created the universe came close—and He invites you to know Him.
