When you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts. Hebrews 3:15

Have you ever delayed doing something you knew was the right thing to do—and later regretted it?

One legalistic parenting program told parents they should demand instant obedience from their children—what they called “first-time obedience.” Toddlers were taught Bible verses like, “I will hurry, without delay, to obey your commands” (Psalm 119:60). But the problem is, most parents, most people, have a hard time doing the right thing, immediately, every time.

When God nudges us to act, our first instinct is often to wait. We say, “I’ll do it tomorrow.” But delayed obedience usually becomes disobedience.

Ashley was in the grocery store picking up something to make for dinner at the last minute. She noticed a tired cashier, clearly overwhelmed. She felt a quiet prompting to encourage her—just a simple word of kindness. But instead, she hesitated—she was in a hurry. By the time she worked up the courage, the cashier had closed her register and walked away. “It was small,” she said, “but I missed it.”

God’s prompts don’t always lead to dramatic moments. Often, they’re small: speak encouragement, forgive quickly, give generously. But each step shapes our hearts to trust Him more. The Bible says this to us: “When you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts” (Hebrews 3:15).

Scripture records a moment when Jesus called two fishermen to become his disciples. With just two words—”Follow me”—He invited them into a new life. They left their nets at once and went with Him (Matthew 4:19-20). That kind of immediate response reveals where a person’s heart really is.

So, when God speaks, don’t wait. Obey today. That’s where joy and freedom begin.
