Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Ephesians 3:20

More than we might ask or think. That’s what one little girl believed that God was capable of.

Dr. Helen Roseveare, a missionary doctor in the Congo during the mid-20th century, shared a remarkable story about a child’s faith in prayer and the God Who goes above and beyond.

One day, a mother at the mission hospital died giving birth to a premature baby. Their only hot water bottle was old and had burst. There was no way to keep the tiny baby warm enough to survive so Dr. Roseveare gathered the staff and children to pray. A little girl named Ruth prayed boldly, asking God for a hot water bottle to come that very afternoon and a doll for the baby’s sister.

Dr. Roseveare had her doubts. They were in the middle of Africa—how could God send a hot water bottle that quickly? To her astonishment, a package arrived later that day from England. Inside was a hot water bottle and, at the bottom, a small doll—exactly what Ruth had prayed for. The package had been on its way for months, yet it arrived the very day it was needed.

Did little Ruth know this verse found in the Bible book of Ephesians? “Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think” (Ephesians 3:20).

What kind of prayers are we praying? Are we only praying for needs that we can imagine God might meet? Let’s be reminded that the God of the Bible is able. He is infinitely able to go above and beyond our small, safe prayers, to answer in ways that are much more–more perfect, more personal, more filled with His great love.
