So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death. Romans 8:1-2
Feel like you’ll never measure up? Shame lies, but God’s truth silences it and rewrites your identity.
When young adults, and really—any of us—don’t measure up, whether in school, work, in a romantic relationship or a job search, it all just adds up in our minds: I am not good enough. I’m an imposter. Shame doesn’t always announce itself, but creeps in.
A minister working with students says that students might not use the word “shame,” but they often speak “in terms of inadequacies, an intense fear of failure, and a vague dread that they’re not good enough …. We point to these perceived failures to corroborate our negative judgments of ourselves. Even the memory of past successes, don’t counteract the shame.” [1]
The fight against shame, “is ultimately a fight to believe truth over lies. It’s a fight to feel what’s true.”[2] The Bible counters the lies we think and the shameful, despondent feelings we feel. The Bible offers the power to rewrite your identity and silence shame for good.
We think: “I have messed up beyond return.” God says, “… anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” (2 Corinthians 5:17). When we feel unqualified, God says, “… My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). When we believe we are unlovable, God says, “Even before He made the world, [He] loved us and chose us” (Ephesians 1:4).
Shame may point to our need for God but in forgiveness through Jesus, God says, “So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1). No condemnation.
