Why do conversations about money become conversations about so much more?
A husband and wife spent weeks disagreeing over how to use their savings. One thought the family needed a new, reliable car. The other wanted to finish the kitchen that needed repairs. The discussion wasn’t really about a car or a kitchen anymore. It had become about whose priorities mattered most.
Money has a way of doing that. It can quietly become tangled up with security, freedom, success, even our sense of control.
Paul, a follower of Jesus, once described a group of believers whose generosity surprised everyone. He said, “They even did more than we had hoped, for their first action was to give themselves to the Lord and to us, just as God wanted them to do” (2 Corinthians 8:5). That’s an interesting phrase. They belonged to Jesus first. And because they belonged to Him, they were committed to one another, too. Their money simply followed the direction their hearts had already taken.
Imagine how that changes a conversation at home. Instead of asking, “Whose idea wins?” you begin with a different question: “Jesus, what would You have us do?” Couples may still disagree, and hard choices still have to be faced. But when two people are surrendered to Jesus and committed to each other’s good, they stop fighting to protect their own interests. They start listening together, trusting God’s wisdom instead of trying to win. That doesn’t mean the car and the kitchen disappear from the conversation. It means you finally start asking the right question together.
Pray before you plan. Remind each other that everything you have is God’s before it’s yours.
