Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come. 1 Timothy 4:8

Could your habits be holding back your body and soul?

You probably won’t be surprised to hear that people are increasingly turning to social media influencers for information. A survey across 17 international markets found that the second most popular type of information people are looking for is related to health and fitness.[1] Priya, 28 years old, admitted that exhaustion was sabotaging her efforts to stay healthy. Ironically, it wasn’t a lack of discipline that was keeping her from her goals—she admitted she was tired from staying up late scrolling through her phone!

Sometimes, even our spiritual growth is disrupted by the way that we care for our bodies. God calls our bodies temples of His Holy Spirit because He lives with those who follow Him (1 Corinthians 6:19). Temples are very special places, but caring for our bodies isn’t about chasing perfection or worldly beauty. Healthy habits honor the God who lives inside the physical bodies He’s gifted us.

Caring for our bodies now is important and practical but not when it leads to vanity or obsession. Scripture says, “Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come” (1 Timothy 4:8). Caring for our bodies is part of stewarding God’s gift, but it is never an excuse for self-centered living.

Small changes—like better sleep, nutrition, or movement—can help us live with the strength and focus we need to serve God and others. What’s one small habit you can embrace to honor God with your body today? Drink more water, take a walk, or rest when you need it.
