Don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today. Matthew 6:34

Have you gotten something you’d always wanted…but were secretly disappointed?

Nick has always been after the next best thing. As a kid, he wanted a bike. When he saved enough money, he immediately wanted a better one. Then he began dreaming about a motorcycle. Cruising on that made him really want a faster performance bike. Each time he realized his dream, there was another one to chase.

Ever experienced that? We often think our discontent stems from not having enough possessions or success. “If I just owned this. If I achieved that or, if I can just get through what I’m going through now, then I could enjoy life.” We live in a world that’s focused on “one day.” Social media makes it mesmerizing to waste hours of today—the only day we’re sure of having–visualizing everything we aren’t or don’t yet have. Instead of living in the joy right in front of us, we live in our imaginations, tearing us away from the present and mistakenly thinking our joy is only possible in the future.[1]

The Bible warns about the dangers of being so fixated on the future that we forget what God is saying and what He’s offering us right now. Jesus was very clear on this. He said, “Don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today” (Matthew 6:34).

Jesus frees us from missing today’s joy because we’re worrying about a tomorrow we can’t predict, control and might not even have. God’s love for us, His desire for relationship with us, His presence with us and the work He gives us to do, all bring joy in the now. Don’t miss today by spending one more minute on tomorrow!
