Are you envious because I am generous? Matthew 20:15 NIV
Ever caught yourself thinking, “That is not fair!”
A professional hair stylist was frustrated. One of her best clients tipped her well—but also gave the same generous tip to the trainee who simply washed the client’s hair. The stylist had spent years perfecting her skill, while the trainee was just learning. “Why should we be rewarded the same?” she complained. Now remember—the seasoned professional was tipped generously. She just didn’t want someone who had done less to get the same reward.
Jesus told a story about this very attitude. A farmer hired workers at different times throughout the day. Some worked all day, others just an hour. Yet when the day ended, he paid each the same amount. Those who’d worked longer protested. But the farmer replied, “Are you envious because I am generous?” (Matthew 20:15).
Jesus was speaking to a deeply human part of us—the part that wants to get what we earn and resents anyone who receives mercy we think they haven’t earned.
Here’s the truth we all need to realize: we’re all equal at the foot of God’s throne. God’s kingdom doesn’t run on merit. It runs on mercy. None of us can earn what God gives. The good news is, we don’t have to. Jesus came to give us what we could never earn and forgive us all our failures. We enter God’s kingdom by receiving His mercy and grace!
Instead of measuring, comparing, and resenting, ask God to shape your heart to delight in His generosity, toward others and toward you. If you allow it, God’s mercy can soften your heart. That’s how we live in His kingdom—free, joyful, and full of grace.
