My friend Kim had had a bad night. Expecting her first baby, she and her husband had recently discovered that the family dog had a stomach condition that made him ill in the night quite often. After a night of little sleep, she wondered how she was going to be able to cope with being up with a baby and a dog in the future!
I reminded her, as I have had to remind myself so many times, not to run ahead of God. None of us have been given today, what we are going to need tomorrow. This is a principle that Jesus illustrated for us when he taught his disciples to pray, “Give us this day, our daily bread.” God provides for us daily, but sometimes we impatiently want more.
My inclination is to want to plan ahead for what might be coming tomorrow. Then, when a panicky feeling arises because I don’t know if I have what I’m going to need for the future, I know I need to go back to the ALL verse in the Bible. Do you know it?
2 Corinthians 9:8 says, “And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” All things…at all times…all that we need. I’d say that covers it. Follower of Jesus, God has made it very clear: you can rest today, and look expectantly to the God of all abundance for all of your tomorrows.
