He must always keep that copy with him and read it daily as long as he lives. That way he will learn to fear the LORD his God by obeying all the terms of these instructions and decrees. Deuteronomy 17:19

You know it’s gossip. But if you listen, add a detail, and explain it away: you’re just concerned.

Sometimes the warnings we stop taking seriously are the ones we know very well.

Before ancient Israel had a king, the Bible says God gave instructions for its rulers. A king wasn’t to accumulate horses, great wealth, or many wives. God warned that those wives would “turn his heart away from the Lord.” Each king was to write and keep a copy of God’s instructions and “read it daily as long as he lives” (Deuteronomy 17:17–19).

Generations later, Solomon became king. He was famous for his wisdom yet he accumulated horses, amassed gold, and married hundreds of women who worshipped other gods. The Bible records, “And in fact, they did turn his heart away from the Lord” (1 Kings 11:3).

His wisdom didn’t keep him from doing what God had warned against.

We recognize that gap in ourselves. Knowing gossip hurts someone doesn’t stop us from adding to it. The first time, our conscience troubles us. But when we keep joining in, what once bothered us can begin to feel normal. What was once a conviction can slowly become negotiable and easier to set aside.

The next time a conversation turns to gossip, you may feel that familiar hesitation. What would happen if you listened to that warning instead of explaining it away? If you asked God to help you speak a kind word about the person who isn’t there to defend themselves?

God told Israel’s kings to return to His words daily. We need to take in God’s Word every day too, maybe not to learn a new lesson. Sometimes we need the humility to obey what we know that God has already said. Today, what truth will you put into practice?

New devotionals like the one you just enjoyed go out every day, which is why your ongoing support makes a difference, reaching someone new, day after day. Your gifts help start Gospel conversations that move people toward Jesus.
