You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. Matthew 5:14-15

Ever noticed how easy it is to slip into habits, just a bit at a time?

The Bible warns that sin works quietly, like a spark that grows into flames (Proverbs 6:27–29). We’re shaped by what we choose to cultivate—the things we watch, read, and admire. If you’re a follower of Jesus, you shine by your integrity, and courage to live differently. When we compromise, we dim the very light the world needs.

The story of a man in the Bible named Lot paints a picture for us. Living in a wicked culture, Lot tried to live by God’s ways, but eventually the evil around him brought destruction and loss into his life (Genesis 19).

When Michael started a new job, he didn’t want to stand out. His coworkers were talking about a new show, so he watched too. At first, he felt uneasy. The show was filled with violence, nudity and crude jokes that pricked his spirit. But week after week, he kept watching, and slowly his discomfort faded. The change was almost invisible—until it wasn’t.

Jesus told His followers: “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house” (Matthew 5:14-15).

How is your light shining today? What might God be calling you out of? Too much time in online debates, shows that glorify violence, or unhealthy habits? It’s never too late to crawl back out from under that basket—and replace your light on the lampstand of your life.

Let’s live so others see the God who welcomes, forgives, restores and guides.
