The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. Proverbs 22:7

When money runs short, it’s easy to feel trapped and desperate. But what if the way out isn’t more money—but more wisdom?

Amira and Kareem loved enjoying life—new clothes, dinners out, weekend getaways. Their income kept up … until Amira lost her job. Instead of adjusting, they turned to credit cards, thinking it was just temporary. But months later, they were drowning in debt. Blaming the economy—or even the job loss—wasn’t helping. They needed a new way forward.

Here’s the truth: borrowing can feel like a lifeline. But it’s usually just a delay tactic. Like pouring water into a bucket with a hole—it doesn’t last. The Bible’s Proverbs warn that “The borrower is servant to the lender” (Proverbs 22:7). Debt may offer freedom now, but it demands servitude later.

So, what are the most common money mistakes?

Mistake #1: Borrowing more to fix the problem. It rarely works. Proverbs says wisdom builds stability—not more debt.

Mistake #2: Confusing wants with needs. Scripture is crystal clear here. It says, “Owe nothing to anyone—except for your obligation to love one another” (Romans 13:8). God promises to meet our needs, not every craving.

Mistake #3: Avoiding financial reality. Many don’t even know what they owe. Ever avoid opening a bill that’s come in the mail? Here scripture says, “The wicked borrow and never repay, but the godly are generous givers” (Psalm 37:21).

If this whole subject has you feeling overwhelmed, start small. Track what you spend. Ask God for wisdom and the humility to change. Peace doesn’t come from more—it comes from trusting God with what you have and what He’s given.

You can invite God into your finances.
