If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. Matthew 16:25

What do you do when life turns out nothing like you’d planned?

Marta thought she’d be married by now. She thought she’d have a house full of kids, the job she trained for—the future she envisioned. Instead, she’s 39, single, and caring for an aging parent.

Isaac had a business he poured his whole life into. Then came a market crash. A betrayal. The collapse of everything he’d worked for. What followed wasn’t just financial loss—it was the death of a dream. Sometimes the ache of what could have been, is overwhelming.

When life doesn’t go the way we hoped, something inside us grieves. And that grief is real. The life you imagined was real to you. But here’s the truth: God is not only in the life you planned—but He’s also powerfully present in the life you have.

When we surrender what we thought life would look like, we often find something deeper. A wise man once said, “He is no fool who gives up what he cannot keep, to gain what he cannot lose.”[1] Intimacy with God and clarity about what really matters waits for us when our faith no longer rests in outcomes, but in Him. Jesus said: “If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give it up for My sake, you will save it.” (Matthew 16:25)

Maybe your story doesn’t look the way you hoped. But God hasn’t left you. He sees every unseen sacrifice. Every quiet loss. He’s still with you—still working—and still writing beauty into your life. Let Him lead. Even through the letting go. Especially through the letting go.
