Is It Ok to Question God?

Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. John 1:38-39 ESV

What if God welcomes your questions?

Mirjalol is a young man from Uzbekistan who came across Christian messages on social media. He didn’t like what he heard. He contacted the Christian media team behind the messages, criticizing Christianity, using offensive language and challenging nearly every answer they gave him. But the team didn’t shut down the conversation. They responded patiently and respectfully.

And something began to change.

Mirjalol started asking different kinds of questions. He wanted to understand what Christians believe and why they believe it. He kept watching online. And his relationship with the people answering his questions changed too. Eventually, he told one of them, “I think I already consider you my best friend.”

Mirjalol is still asking questions, and he’s slowly coming to faith. His story reflects something we see in the Bible: questions and conversations are an important part of our journey toward Jesus.

The first time Jesus speaks in the Bible book of John, He asks a question. Two men were curious about Jesus and began following Him. Jesus turned around and asked them, “What are you seeking?” They answered with a question of their own. Jesus didn’t give them a lecture. He gave them an invitation: “Come and you will see” (John 1:38-39 ESV). God isn’t ever threatened by our questions. In fact, He invites us to come closer with them.

Around the world, Christian media is starting conversations with people like Mirjalol who are asking questions and moving toward Jesus. You can help make those conversations possible by sharing the message of Jesus in languages people can understand.

Someone’s next step toward faith may begin with a question. Help keep the conversations going the world over. Give a gift today at guidelines.org.
