For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23

What does it mean to be sinful?

When Nikolas noticed a thin crack in the corner of his kitchen wall, he ignored it. The house was old—little flaws were normal. But over time, the crack deepened, and new ones appeared. Soon, a piece of plaster broke loose. That’s when a builder came and said, “This isn’t just surface damage. Your foundation has shifted.”

That’s what sin is like.

We often think of sin as just bad behavior—lying, stealing, hurting others. But the Bible describes sin as something deeper: a broken foundation, a disconnection between us and God.

The Bible explains, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Though we were made to be in a life-giving relationship with Him, we’re all born into lives that are rebelliously disconnected from Him. That means sin isn’t just what we do—it’s the condition we’re all born into.

Like the crack we try to paint over, sin shows up in our relationships, our choices, and even our thoughts. Sin makes us hide. It makes us blame. It whispers that we can fix ourselves. But we can’t. We need more than a coat of paint—we need a new foundation.

God exposes sin to heal, not crush us. The builder who inspected Nickolas’s house didn’t scold him—he made a plan to repair what was broken. And God does the same for us. He sees past the surface to what’s truly wrong—and He loves us enough to make it right.

The first step isn’t trying harder. It’s being honest. There’s a crack in the wall. But God is ready to restore the foundation.
