They agreed that they were foreigners and nomads here on earth … But they were looking for a better place, a heavenly homeland. Hebrews 11:13-16
What if feeling out of place in this world means you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be?
In a refugee camp outside the city, a woman sat with her small sack of belongings. Her home was gone. Her country, no longer safe. She felt invisible. Forgotten. Like she had no place in this world.
But then someone told her that Jesus once lived the same way. He said, “Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but [I have] no place even to lay [my] head” (Luke 9:58). Yes, Jesus wandered too—sleeping in borrowed homes, depending on His Father for daily provision. He knew this world wasn’t His final home. And if you follow Him, it’s not yours either.
The Bible describes many people of faith saying, “They agreed that they were foreigners and nomads here on earth … looking forward to a better place, a heavenly homeland” (Hebrews 11:13-16). That list of faithful people includes Abraham, who wandered with no land of his own. But it also includes the kings and rulers who lived in palaces. Others lived in caves. But all of them learned to fix their eyes—not on what they had—but on what God had promised.
Whether you live in a tent or a mansion, if you belong to Jesus, you’re literally just passing through this life. This truth brings hope to the poor and humility to the rich. It reminds us that real treasure isn’t found here and now, but in Jesus alone. Jesus said, “Don’t store up treasures here on earth … Store your treasures in heaven” (Matthew 6:19–20).
Wherever you are today, whether you feel forgotten or comfortable, lift your eyes. There’s more. A kingdom is coming. And Jesus is preparing a place for His followers.
