So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. 1 Corinthians 3:7 NIV
Here’s why one conversation about Jesus might matter more than you think.
Although Maya’s roommate had asked a lot of questions and they’d had a great initial conversation about following Jesus, her roommate didn’t suddenly commit to following Jesus. She asked more questions. Some days she seemed interested. Other days, distant. Maya kept praying. She kept being present. She kept showing kindness.
There were moments when Maya wondered: Is it enough? Did I say the right things? Should I have done more? But then Maya reads the scripture that says, “It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit” (Isaiah 55:11). God never wastes truth. He never wastes love. The Bible also explains, “Some plant, others water, but it is God who makes things grow” (1 Corinthians 3:6-7). If you’re sharing about Jesus with someone, your job isn’t to control the outcome—it’s to keep being faithful.
One man who eventually decided to follow Jesus completely said it this way: “I still remember the first person who mentioned God to me. Then years later, someone else showed me a love I couldn’t explain. And a few months after that, a friend invited me to read the Bible. I realized God had been speaking to me all along, through each of them, meeting me right where I was.”
Maybe you’ve shared the good news of Jesus with someone and nothing seemed to happen. Maybe you’ve shown God’s love to someone for years and they still resist. Don’t give up on praying for them. Keep living out your faith. Keep loving, following Jesus’s example. Keep planting seeds by sharing when asked. Because God is the gardener. Only He makes things grow and His timing is perfect.
