In a quiet corner of a Turkish prison, a radio is playing.
Omer is in prison in Turkey. When you hear that, you might picture the Hollywood version of a Turkish prison—a harsh place, filled with desperate prisoners, cruel guards, and little sense of fairness. At the very least, you can imagine the uncertainty and loss of control Omer and his fellow inmates live with each day. But Jesus is there too.
Omer actually came to faith in Jesus when he was about eighteen years old. Later, because of some life choices, he ended up in prison. His family doesn’t visit, and there is little to do in his confined world. But neither the bars on his cell nor the walls surrounding the prison can keep the transformational message of Jesus out—because the good news comes to Omer over the airwaves of a nearby Christian radio station.
The kind voice that reaches them with the love of Jesus is Pastor Ender’s. After listening for some time, Omer was able to contact Paster Ender, telling him how he and others in the prison found the station’s broadcast. The broadcasts bring daily teaching, music, and devotionals like this to an otherwise hopeless place.
But Omer wanted more. Four other men listen with him. “Could the station send them Bibles and other materials?” he asked. The men not only wanted to listen to the broadcast but also to start studying the Bible together.
“Faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ” (Romans 10:17) the Bible explains. Scripture declares, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!” (Romans 10:15b). But sometimes the message first comes, not on foot, but over the airwaves.
