In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. Matthew 5:16

They’re called influencers—they’re the people who have the power to motivate us to act in one way or another.

With 45% of the world’s population on social media, the role of an influencer is a powerful one. You may not be a celebrity, sports superstar, or fashion icon but you are an influencer.  You influence your family, your coworkers, your classmates, and your neighborhood. If you’re parenting, you’re an influencer 24/7!

Beyond our human potential to impact others positively, if you are a follower of Jesus, you have the power inside you to influence people and this world for eternity. Jesus told his disciples, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you” (Acts 1:8a). The Holy Spirit did come as Jesus promised and He comes to each person who surrenders control of their life to Him, accepting His gift of forgiveness and new life.

This is what living by the Holy Spirit’s power looks like:  The Bible book of Ephesians says, “So be careful how you live.  Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise.  Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days.  Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do” (Ephesians 5:15-17).  And here are some specifics: “Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life.  Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit…singing spiritual songs… And give thanks for everything in God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 5:18-20).

Living out just those few instructions alone would make for a powerfully countercultural life of influence. Influencer, “let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father! (Matthew 5:16).
