May the glory of the Lord continue forever! The Lord takes pleasure in all he has made. Psalm 104:31

Does God have fun…or is He only concerned with weighty matters?

It was the trip of a lifetime. For her 60th birthday, Cookie’s husband took her to a resort on a tropical isle, complete with over the water cottages. They lounged, laughed, ate and snorkeled in the crystal blue turquoise water. She said, “We started out with the colorful, innocuous fish residing in the confines of the corals in shallower water [moving] to the massive, darting sharks and graceful turtles in the deep blue. The diversity of colors and creatures in that sliver of ocean was mind-boggling! We got a glimpse of heaven, departing with a sense of uninhibited mirth…. we knew that God was having fun with us!”

Often when we think of God, we imagine Him only occupied with serious theological things, but the Psalms agree with Cookie when they say, “The Lord takes pleasure in all that he has made” (Psalm 104:31b). The limitlessly creative God of all beauty hand selected nature’s splendor—crafting the shapes, sizes and colors. The God of the Bible takes pleasure in beauty, and also in joy! The Bible says that He delights in His creation and takes joy in the people He created.

Jesus said, “The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life” (John 10:10). A rich and satisfying one is a life of joy…and of fun!

And then there’s this: God created babies that laugh before they can even talk. We can be sure that God laughs right along with us, His kids! So go have some fun and don’t forget to bask in His pleasure as you do.
