God’s Unlikely Candidates

Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you. Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God. 1 Corinthians 1:26-29

Do you ever feel unqualified for life?

When Kylie found herself homeless at 18 after aging out of the foster care system, she didn’t have many qualifications or a resume. Looking through job postings, she kept seeing requirements she couldn’t meet.

Kylie–and you and I, can find a great source of courage in the people God chose in the Bible. God doesn’t look for the most promising, ambitious, and intelligent. In fact, God explains why He enjoys picking the least likely candidates for the most incredible jobs in the Bible.

It says, “Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you. Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:26-29).

Jesus chose a rough and scrappy crew of fishermen and a despised tax collector and a group of women without social or political power for his closest friends, disciples and future leaders. What did Jesus see in these rejected people? Scripture says “The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7)

If, like Kylie, you feel you’re not a likely candidate to be chosen by God, think again! Ask Him to shine through your life today to share His love and reveal His power!
