You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate…the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it. Matthew 7:13-14

Do you feel like you’re traveling an all uphill path right now? Here’s some encouraging news for you.

Scientists have long studied the regions of the world where people live longest, trying to determine the diets, lifestyles, and genetics that result in the healthiest lives. Areas where people regularly live to be over a hundred years old are referred to as “Blue Zones,” and Sardinia, Italy, is the first of five such locations.

One of the surprising reasons researchers believe Sardinians live longer is because of the steep and rocky terrain of the island. People walk everywhere and, as a result, are constantly getting low-intensity and medium-intensity exercise climbing up steep hills and steps.[1]

Most of us prefer to walk downhill rather than uphill! We’re drawn to what’s easy and requires less exertion. But the Bible tells us that the way to find an abundant life with God, is to walk a narrow and difficult path. It says, “You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate…the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it” (Matthew 7:13-14).

The challenges we face, we’re told, will work in us endurance, character, and hope that doesn’t disappoint (Romans 5:3-3). Much like a sweaty workout achieves muscle growth and strength, the hardships we overcome as we follow Jesus are shaping us and working God’s life within us!

Don’t shy away from the hard things God is calling you to or groan in frustration at every opportunity you’re presented that requires you to grow in patience, love, or faith. In the bigger picture, these steep hills work for us, enriching and strengthening us!
