The Nicest Thing

Bible Text: Song of Sol. 1:16 | Speaker: Darlene Sala | Series: Encouraging Words | I recently read about a couple who sat down every week to write each other a love letter.  Now, that’s not unusual for couples who are not yet married. In fact, lovers who can’t be near each other often write or email each other every day.  But this couple was married.

The highlight of their letters was when they shared a TNT, which stands for “The Nicest Thing. They said, “We tell each other what we think is the nicest thing the other has said or done, and how that has made us feel. Sometimes those TNTs are as powerful as dynamite!”[i]

Whether or not your mate will agree to writing a letter every week, that doesn’t need to stop you from putting a note in your husband’s briefcase or your wife’s handbag about what you think is the nicest thing he or she did for you this past week.

It’s easy to get started. All you have to write is “The nicest thing this week about you is–” and then jot down what that is. If you need a suggestion, read the Song of Solomon in the Old Testament.  Now there’s a man who knew how to express himself!  You can borrow from his words if you can’t think of any of your own. How about this one, for instance: “Pleasing is the fragrance of your perfumes” (Song of Sol. 1:3). Or this one: “How handsome you are, my lover!” (Song of Sol. 1:16) Okay, okay—I understand that’s not your style. Then how about just writing, “The Nicest Thing about you this week was that you met me at the door when I came home from work. It made me know you missed me.”

Days and weeks can go by so quickly without our taking time to express admiration to those we love. Writing a TNT is free, but it can make a world of difference. Not married?  Then write one to your mom—or even to God!
