Whole Bible study series have been written on the seven pieces of the armor of God—from the book of Ephesians in the Bible, chapter 6.  Those seven are the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit.

Now, of course, salvation is extremely important, for believing that Christ’s death on the cross paid for our sins is what brings us assurance of forgiveness and confidence that we will one day have a home in heaven with Jesus for all eternity.

But what is the importance of salvation being our helmet? Well, let’s think about what a helmet does.  Obviously, it’s designed to protect your head. As a Christian, the biggest battlefield you have is in your mind. That’s where most of the spiritual warfare you fight takes place. For instance, Satan loves to drop thoughts into your mind that will make you doubt that you are truly a child of God. You may sometimes wonder, “Do I really know for sure that I’ll go to heaven when I die?” So, instead of enjoying that confidence, you struggle with doubts that rob you of peace and joy and assurance.

Therefore, when doubts come, so does the importance of having the helmet of salvation. Wearing this helmet, we can, the Bible says, “destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5).

The apostle John penned these words, “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life” (1 John 5:13). Stop a moment right now to thank God for the helmet of salvation!
