For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Hebrews 4:15

What makes a great leader? Is it brains? Bravado?

A person’s character will define their leadership. In other words, leadership starts with integrity. And your integrity will determine where you lead people and the type of impact you’ll have.

Kyle is a young businessperson. He had to re-evaluate his understanding of integrity when his business partners confronted him about his lack of respect for employees in the company. He’d always thought of integrity as honesty, but his partners pointed out that it encompasses our teachability, respect for others, and entire approach to life.

The Bible often talks about integrity as uprightness. Jesus was the perfect example of integrity, experiencing temptations, just like anyone else, yet choosing to live uprightly. About Jesus, the Bible says, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15). Jesus helps His followers to say make integrity-filled choices.

A well-known business writer shares three questions to ask when assessing our integrity.[1] The first is, “Am I consistent?” Am I the same person no matter who I’m with? The second is, “Do I make decisions that are best for others even when another choice would benefit me?” This measures if you’re a safe and trustworthy person for those around you. The third question is, “Am I quick to recognize others for their efforts and contributions to my success?”

These questions lead us to become more like Jesus, walking rightly before God and in our dealings with others. Want to be a great leader? Start cultivating integrity today.
