Why Isn’t God Answering?

Your road led through the sea, your pathway through the mighty water—a pathway no one knew was there. Psalms 77:19

He had the degree.  He’d done research with a prestigious university. Month after month went by and my son applied for jobs, networked, interviewed, and interviewed.  But not a single job offer in eight months.

It’s impossible not to wonder why.  Why wasn’t God answering the many prayers being prayed for him? Scripture says that God gives good gifts to those who ask him! (Matthew 7:11)

What is God doing when He seems silent?  How often in our lives do we think that God doesn’t hear, isn’t in control or isn’t even good, when we pray and there’s no answer? But the Bible book of Philippians says this: “It is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” (Philippians 2:13)

As I kept asking and kept reading, God answered me in Psalm 77, where Israel looked back on their 40 years of wandering around in a desert with these words: “Your road led through the sea, your pathway through the mighty water—a pathway no one knew was there.” (Psalm 77:19)

I would never think that a pathway through mighty waters would be the best one, or that there would even be a pathway there.  I’m grateful for this reminder that God will act in His power and in His time, in our lives.  His ways build our faith and our hope.  I’m still praying, and by the time you hear this, I’m trusting that my son… will be at work!
